Police in Summit County are trying to find a man who robbed a bank Wednesday. About 11:30 a.m., a man walked into the Wells Fargo branch at Kimball Junction and demanded money from the teller, according to the Sheriff's Office. The bandit was last seen exiting the bank on foot. He was described as Hispanic, about 5 feet 6 inches tall, with a slender build, brown hair and a black mustache extending to his chin. Kidnapper pleads no contest in two other cases
A man convicted of trying to kidnap a 9-year-old Provo girl has pleaded no contest to trying to abduct two Springville girls. Jimmy Guard, 27, was convicted by a jury in May of first-degree felony child kidnapping in the Provo case and faces up to life in prison when he is sentenced Aug. 2 in 4th District Court. In the Springville case, Guard pleaded no contest to two third-degree felony counts of attempted kidnapping. Sentencing in that case is set for Aug. 30. The Provo girl kicked and punched Guard, then ran away, according to trial testimony. In the Springville case, Guard was seen talking to the girls, ages 7 and 12, in their backyard. In Guard's car, police said they found a hatchet, video camera, latex gloves, condoms and a prescription medication that causes drowsiness.
Former teacher sentenced for relations with student
A former Emery County junior high teacher has been sentenced to 90 days home confinement for having sex with a 15-year-old student. Brandy Yates, 30, of Ferron, had earlier pleaded no contest to third-degree felony attempted forcible sexual abuse with the victim, a male student at San Rafael Junior High School, according to court records. During a Tuesday sentencing, 7th District Judge Bruce Halliday also placed Yates on three years of probation, fined her $1,500 and ordered sex-offender therapy. Yates must also add her name to the state's sex-offender registry.
Ex-inmate charged in shooting death of parolee
An ex-prison inmate suspected in the shooting death of a parolee on an Ogden street last month has been ordered to stand trial on charges of first-degree felony murder, illegal gun possession and evading police. Joseph Logan Lee, 24, allegedly confessed to police that on June 1 he shot Tyler J. Harper, 23, according to preliminary hearing testimony. The defendant and victim were arguing outside a apartment complex when Lee shot Harper in the chest, according to police. Lee is to be arraigned Aug. 31 before 2nd District Judge Michael Lyon. Lee was discharged from prison in February after serving time for forgery, burglary and theft. Harper was paroled in March after serving time for theft by receiving stolen property and failure to respond to police.
More come forward against child-sex-abuse suspect
Since a Provo man was charged last month with sexually abusing a young boy, others claiming to be victims have come forward, according to police. Sean Foster Coffin, 34, is charged with two counts of sodomy on a child in the alleged molestation of a 9-year-old boy he was baby-sitting in May. A competency review is set for Aug. 16 before 4th District Judge Anthony Schofield. Meanwhile, other potential victims, including an 11-year-old boy who claims Coffin molested him during the summer of 2004, are talking to police. An investigator claimed in court documents that Coffin poses a threat to community children. On Tuesday, a judge ordered the defendant held without bail.
