The possibility is greater than ever. Even team owner Dave Checketts says Tuesday's vote "puts the future of the club in Utah in serious jeopardy." RSL maintains it must have a soccer-specific stadium. Without one, it may bolt. Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson fears the team could move to Rochester, N.Y., where a 13,500-seat soccer stadium recently opened. He says the western New York city has offered Checketts three times what he paid for the franchise. Phoenix, Portland and St. Louis (where Checketts owns a hockey team) are other possibilities.
Is SLC back in the stadium game?
Yes. Anderson says RSL and the governor are interested in the city's plan to put the stadium at the state-owned fairpark. Checketts stresses it's "not the end of the road" for RSL. Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber says he plans to visit Utah to help scout for a stadium site, probably in Salt Lake City. A downtown location remains in play, though the team would probably have to dump or at least downsize its plans for major development around the stadium.
What is Sandy's next move?
Mayor Tom Dolan says he won't court the county for any more public money for a stadium near 9400 South State. Instead, he may seek help for the mega-development he envisioned around it.
Will legislators punish the county?
House Speaker Greg Curtis, who has pushed for a stadium in his Sandy hometown, says no. "I've got enough things to worry about besides trying to punish the city and county."
What happens to the hotel taxes?
Curtis vows to steer the hotel taxes, estimated at $90 million, toward building a TRAX line to Salt Lake City International Airport.
What about a downtown arts district?
The Sandy deal would have freed up $45 million for downtown projects, including buying the mothballed Utah Theatre on Main Street and re-creating Japan Town west of the Salt Palace. County Councilman Randy Horiuchi says that dream now is "much further away." And he says Salt Lake City can forget winning any legislative help for a Broadway theater downtown - though Anderson vows to try.
