With gaining university status as the goal, Utah Valley State College has hired a state lawmaker and a businessman to help the school position itself as a contributor to business and economic growth in Utah County.

Republican Rep. Steve Clark, who represents District 63 in Provo, has been named director of UVSC's Small Business Development Center. A former Provo city councilman and a businessman, Clark replaces Shauna Theobald, who agreed to stay on to allow a smooth transition under a new director, UVSC officials said Wednesday.

Clark's hire date was July 1.

Ken Fakler, former owner and manager of Fakler Tire Service, has the job as UVSC's manager of business development. While the job title is new, Fakler fills the existing position of assistant SBDC director - his predecessor left the post six months ago.

Fakler's start date is July 31.

Clark's salary will be $50,000 to $55,000, according to UVSC human resources officials, while Fakler will be paid $40,000 to $45,000. Both salaries are paid for by UVSC and the state/federal Small Business Development Program.

Both Clark and Fakler have held adjunct faculty posts at UVSC.

"As the UVSC gears up to become a regional state university, we need to play a more prominent role in economic development in our area," UVSC President William Seederburg said in a statement. "These two menwill give us a major presence in the business community."
