County Council urges special session

By unanimous vote, the Salt Lake County Council has passed a resolution calling on the governor to convene a special session next month to authorize four counties to put a sales tax hike on the November ballot for mass transit.

But the move may be a nonstarter, because Senate leaders already have rejected the idea.

If voters green-light the quarter-percent increase, it could facilitate four new TRAX spurs and possibly commuter rail.

Despite the request, county leaders still are contemplating an $895 million bond - to be repaid by property taxes - to launch the TRAX extensions.
