Staff members at The Salt Lake Tribune received 28 awards - including 13 first-place honors and recognition as "Best Newspaper" - from the Utah Headliners Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. The awards, presented Friday evening, included special recognition of the Utah Media Coalition's work to protect the public's access to state government records. Tribune Editor Nancy Conway and Deseret Morning News Publisher John Hughes accepted the Clifford P. Cheney Service to Journalism award on behalf of the coalition. Tribune reporters Matt Canham and Peggy Fletcher Stack received the Don Baker Investigative Reporting Award for "The Shrinking Majority," their examination of the LDS Church's dwindling dominance of the state's population. Deseret News reporter Lee Davidson won the Roy B. Gibson Freedom of Information Award for his use of federal and state open records laws in his reporting. Two Tribune reporters, Canham and Brooke Adams, were named first and second, respectively, in the Best Newspaper Reporter grouping; The Tribune's Chris Detrick was recognized as Division A's Best Photographer; and Pat Bagley, the newspaper's cartoonist, was the only winner in the Editorial Cartoon category.
