Latino sailor wins national award

A Utah sailor has received an award from a national advocacy group for Latinos.

Petty Officer Joseph Mena received an award for public service, one of two given to members of the Navy, from National Image Inc. The award was given for Mena's involvement in the Latino community in the Salt Lake area.

Mena is a naturalized citizen and resident of Utah since 1988. He has served in then Navy for six years. He will be speaking at 5 p.m. Friday at Poder Para La Familia on 1737 S. Redwood Rd. PPLF is a nonprofit organization that provides prevention, intervention and educational assistance to at-risk youth referred by the court.
