Rob Weyher, 54, the Summit County Democratic Party chairman, was charged Tuesday with driving under the influence, assault on a police officer, interfering with a police officer, speeding and failure to signal - the result of an April 24 traffic stop near Kimball Junction.

The Summit County Attorney's Office filed the charges in Park City's 3rd District Court. All five charges are misdemeanors.

Weyher's attorney, Joe Tesch, said Tuesday afternoon that his client is not guilty on all charges.

"We haven't seen the charges. But from what we know, he's totally innocent," Tesch said. "We want this tried in a court of law - not in the press."

In light of the allegations, the county Democratic committee met Monday to consider Weyher's position. It voted to retain him as chairman.

"A person is innocent until proven guilty," committee member Laura Bonham said. If Weyher is convicted, however, the committee may revisit the issue, she added.

Bonham downplayed an earlier flap amid suggestions that Weyher had indirectly contributed to the campaign of a Republican candidate for the Summit County Commission.

She characterized a $250 cash donation to Republican Bill Miles as a misunderstanding between Miles and committee member Mike Marty. Weyher said he had given Marty cash for a start-up organization dedicated to retaining Summit County's commission form of government. Marty later gave cash to Miles.

Bonham pointed out that Weyher is supporting Miles' opponent, incumbent Democratic Commissioner Bob Richer. She said Weyher has contributed $1,000 to Richer's campaign.
