Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. announced the release of a new statewide plan to help combat obesity from several fronts, ranging from the home to schools to government offices.

"Tipping the Scales Toward a Healthier Population: The Utah Blueprint to Promote Healthy Weight for Children, Youth and Adults" details objectives and plans to decrease the obesity rate in Utah.

"We want every entity to assume active roles of leadership to help make the healthy choice the easy choice," said Jessie Shupe, spokeswoman for the Utah Department of Health. "By 2010 we want to decrease childhood and youth overweight rates and see no increase in adult obesity rates."

The 54-page plan encourages healthier eating habits, more active lifestyles and better support from the greater community to solve skyrocketing obesity rates, which can be as high as 17 percent in children and 22 percent in adults, according to the report.
