ST. GEORGE, Utah - Former Santa Clara City Treasurer Betty McEntire has been accused of embezzling an undisclosed amount over the last two years.

McEntire was charged by Washington County prosecutors Tuesday with second-degree felony misuse of public money and theft. She was not arrested but a summons was issued for her to appear in court on May 3.

Auditors discovered an accounting discrepancy for the city's municipal court funds on March 20, and McEntire, who had worked for the city for 10 years, resigned after authorities were contacted the next day.

County Attorney Brock Belnap said the amount allegedly embezzled will not be released until the preliminary hearing. However, for a second-degree felony charge, the amount must exceed $5,000.

Second-degree felonies carry a maximum sentence of one to 15 years in prison.
