Shawqi Omar in Utah

* Shawqi Omar, a Kuwaiti-born father of six children, came to the United States on a student visa in 1979. He temporarily served in the Minnesota National Guard before moving to Salt Lake City in 1984.

* Omar's wife, Sandra - a native of South Dakota - gave birth to two daughters while in Salt Lake City.

* Officials at Utah State University say Omar applied to transfer to the Logan school in summer 1986. Although a petition filed by his family indicates he attended there, the college's public relations director said the registrar's office had found no other record of Omar's attendance.

* Omar became a U.S. citizen on Nov. 17, 1986, identifying on his certificate of naturalization that he was living in an apartment in Salt Lake City. He left the state in 1989.

* While in Utah, Omar was active in the Muslim community and, friends and family members say, was a member of a group of citizens dedicated to raising money and awareness of Palestinian causes.
