The Sanpete County Jail in Manti looks like it belongs on an old TV cop show.
''It's an old-fashioned jail. I think we're the last Mayberry in the state,'' Sheriff's Lt. Robert Braithwaite said.
Sanpete County officials are pushing for a new, $12 million, 128-bed facility to replace their 44-bed building.
The new jail would be able to house more local inmates long term and could house about 50 state inmates. The sheriff's office said it would hire up to 30 new deputies to work in the new jail.
The county is working to come up with the money.
County leaders are planning for a $4 million general obligation bond election in June.
