Transportation officials in Utah on Monday said more than 80 percent of fatalities in highway work zones are drivers and their passengers, not highway workers. Officials of the Utah Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration and Utah Highway Patrol marked National Work Zone Awareness Week by announcing 1,068 people were killed in work-zone collisions across the nation in 2004, the most recent year with full-year statistics from the U.S. Department of Transportation. In Utah, three people were killed and 223 people were injured in the 1,026 total work zone accidents occurring in 2004. "Drivers and passengers have far more to lose by speeding through work zones than workers do," said UHP Lt. Shawn Judd.
