The Salt Lake City Council unanimously approved a resolution Tuesday honoring Police Chief Rick Dinse, who is retiring March 31.

The resolution applauds Dinse for his work since he started in Salt Lake City in August 2000, including preparing for the 2002 Winter Olympics, overseeing a reduction in major crime, forming a homeland security unit to prepare for a major catastrophe and mending relationships with the police union.

He was also at the helm during Elizabeth Smart's kidnapping and return, and Lori Hacking's murder.

"We will miss you," City Council Chairman Dave Buhler told the chief, who was given a standing ovation by a packed audience Tuesday night.

Dinse said he initially felt trepidation moving to Utah but now calls his time here "the greatest experience in my career. It has been absolutely a dream job."
