CLEARFIELD - A month after Mayor Dan Phelps abruptly resigned, Clearfield is about to get a new mayor.

The City Council plans to pick from among five candidates at a special meeting Wednesday. Four of the five were to be interviewed Monday night. The fifth was interviewed previously.

The five mayoral hopefuls are:

* Planning Commissioner Mark Shepherd, who finished second to Phelps in November's election

* Councilman Don Wood , who is acting mayor

* Former Councilman Jim Barlow

* Former city Recorder Dick Waite, who also was Fruit Heights' city manager

* Andrew Higham, an 18-year-old senior at Clearfield High.

Phelps did not disclose his personal reasons for stepping down barely a month after taking office.

He also resigned his teaching post at the LDS seminary at Central Davis Junior High and was replaced as a stake president for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Phelps had not previously held public office.
