A head-on collision Friday morning on Interstate 15 killed two young men and closed the southbound lanes for about three hours as police investigated and emergency crews removed the bodies and vehicles. Adam C. Hare, 18, of West Jordan, and Paul R. Perkins, 25, of Layton, died at the scene. The accident occurred shortly about 6:45 a.m. near the interchange for 900 North when Hare, driving north in a 1996 Mercury Sable, crossed the median and entered the southbound lanes, the Utah Highway Patrol reported. Hare's car was hit head-on by Perkins, who was driving a 1998 Nissan Altima, the UHP said. Hare wasn't wearing a seat belt, but Perkins was, according to UHP. There were no passengers in either car. The wreck closed the southbound lanes for about three hours during the morning commute and briefly closed the left northbound lane.

Woman killed while trying to turn into driveway
A Uintah County woman died Thursday night while trying to steer her car into her driveway, the Utah Highway Patrol reported. Charlotte Zufelt, 55, of Ft. Duchesne, had stopped her 2005 Buick in the eastbound lane of U.S. Highway 40 near Ft. Duchesne, waiting for oncoming traffic to pass so she could turn her vehicle left into her driveway, when she was hit from behind by a 2003 Ford Explorer, the UHP reported. The crash pushed Zufelt into the westbound lane where her car was struck by a 2000 Dodge pick-up truck. Drugs or alcohol are not suspected as factors, but investigators will present the case to the Uintah County attorney to determine whether to charge the driver of the Explorer, said UHP Trooper Jeff Nigbur. Zufelt was not wearing a seatbelt.
Police investigate shooting incident in alley
Salt Lake City police on Friday continued to investigate a man who shot at someone who tried to break into his house on Thursday. About 2 p.m., a man heard someone trying to gain entry through the back door of his house, in the 800 South block of Edison Street (145 East), with a crow bar, according to police. Upon realizing he had been discovered, the would-be burglar fled to a nearby truck and drove south through an alley. The man fired a gun at the truck, according to police. Utah law is unclear on whether a homeowner can use deadly force against an intruder who has fled the homeowner's property.
