Clearfield man dies in single-car wreck on I-15

A 20-year-old Clearfield man died Saturday morning when he lost control of his car on Interstate 15, the Utah Highway Patrol reported. Kiniki Sepuldede died about 1:45 a.m. when his car went off the right side of I-15 near State Road 108 and overturned twice, Department of Public Safety spokesman Derek Jensen said. Sepuldede was ejected. The cause of the crash was still under investigation. The on-ramp for State Route 108 and one lane on I-15 were closed for a short period of time.

Car overturns in Box Elder County; 1 dead, 1 hurt

A Cache County man was killed and another injured Saturday morning in Box Elder County when their car overturned on a dirt road about 25 miles south of the ghost town of Kelton. The crash occurred about 9 a.m. on the east Hogups Mountain road, Box Elder County Deputy Sheriff Lynn Yates said. Investigators were still trying to determine the cause of the crash. The names of the two men were not released.

Pickup rollover claims life of 18-year-old Vernal man

An 18-year-old Vernal man died Friday morning on U.S. 40 when he lost control of his pickup and it overturned several times. The single-vehicle crash that killed Morgan Morris occurred about 1:10 a.m. near the town of Jensen, said Department of Public Safety spokesman Derek Jensen. Morris was ejected from his pickup and died at the scene of the crash.

One rides slide as nine

Nine people escaped an avalanche Saturday in Utah County without any injuries. The avalanche occurred in Box Elder Canyon above the town of Alpine. The Utah County Sheriff's Office said none of the nine were buried, but one person rode the slide down.

Taylorsville power outage contributes to injuries

A power outage Saturday night in Taylorsville contributed to a traffic accident that sent two people to the hospital. The 40-minute outage began about 7:25 p.m. and left about 7,600 households without electricity, said Margaret Oler, a spokeswoman for Utah Power. The affected area stretched from 4100 South to 5400 South, mostly east of Redwood Road, said Oler, who did not know what caused the outage. The traffic lights at the 5400 South and 1300 West intersection were out when a westbound Chevrolet Camaro turning left was struck by an eastbound Chevrolet Cavalier, said Taylorsville police Sgt. Vaughn Allen. The Cavalier hit the Camaro on the right front quarter panel. The people in the Camaro weren't injured but the two people in the Cavalier were taken to University Hospital for treatment, Allen said.

Officers nab seven in drug bust at SLC residence

Seven Salt Lake Valley residents were arrested Thursday at a Salt Lake City residence on suspicion of drug-related charges. Salt Lake City narcotics officers, with the help of the SWAT team, served a search warrant at the residence in the 500 North block of 800 West, according to police spokeswoman Robin Snyder. She said officers seized crack, methamphetamine, marijuana and Lortab.

Stolen vehicle recovered, but driver gets away

Police on Thursday night found a car stolen after a chase in Box Elder County, but the juvenile suspect is still at large. A 17-year-old boy tried to outrun police in Brigham City on Wednesday night. When sheriff's deputies used spike strips to stop the vehicle, they captured three teenage passengers, but the driver escaped and was believed to have stolen a Chevy Cavalier from a house in Honeyville. Sheriff's Chief Deputy Lynn Yates said Ogden police found the car about 11 p.m. Thursday, but there was no sign of the suspect. He's described as Hispanic and was last seen wearing a black jacket with white stripes. Yates said he has gang affiliations.

Prison for 'up to life' for gang retaliation killing

A man who shot a 15-year-old boy in 2004 over an earlier gang-related incident was sentenced Friday to prison for up to life. William Dav Mathipannha, 23, pleaded guilty last month in 3rd District Court to first-degree felony murder for shooting Sang B. Nguyen as the teen stood outside a West Valley City apartment building on Oct. 27, 2004. Prosecutors said Nguyen was targeted because he had helped beat up a member of Mathipannha's gang earlier that day. In exchange for his plea, four other cases involving thefts, drugs and weapons were dismissed.

Four-year prison sentence for ID theft conviction

A West Jordan man has been sentenced to four years in prison for using another man's identity last year to buy a truck and other goods. Under the sentence imposed Thursday by U.S. District Judge Tena Campbell, Jason Albertson also must pay $5,259 in restitution. As part of a deal with prosecutors, Albertson, 24, pleaded guilty to two counts of fraud with identification documents.
