An 11-year-old boy shot a 9-year-old playmate in the face with a 22. caliber rifle Thursday afternoon after finding the gun in a closet in the 9-year-old's Plain City home. The shooting, which occurred about 4:20 p.m., is being called an accident. The injured boy was rushed by ambulance to Ogden Regional Medical Center in serious condition after the bullet struck his jaw and mouth, Weber County Sheriff's Capt. Klint Anderson said. The 11-year-old and the 9-year-old and his two sisters, ages 12 and 13, found the rifle and two BB guns on the top shelf of a closet at a home in the 1400 North block of 4200 West. It is unclear if the rifle was loaded when it was found or if the kids loaded it, Anderson said. The 11-year-old, who was described as a cousin or close friend, was holding the gun when it discharged and struck the 9-year-old at "very close range," Anderson said. The injured boy ran to a neighbor's house for help after being shot. His parents weren't home when the shooting occurred, Anderson said. When authorities arrived, the boy was conscious and able to speak. It has not been determined if charges will be filed in the case. - Jason Bergreen
