Before they began getting cold feet Wednesday, senators appeared solidly behind SB156, which would allow legislators - instead of voters - to pick U.S. Senate candidates. Among the strongest defenders was Senate President John Valentine.

The Orem Republican said senators don't believe they know better than the public.

Utah Democratic Party Executive Director Todd Taylor called the legislation "shameful."
