WEST JORDAN - David Newton, a retired entrepreneur who previously served two years on the City Council, took the oath Tuesday as the new mayor of Utah's fifth-largest city.
"It's humbling to be back up here," Newton said as he addressed the crowded chambers from his seat amid the rest of the City Council. "I'm grateful to be able to serve."
West Jordan - with an estimated population approaching 94,000 - is the largest Utah city to get a new mayor this election cycle.
Newton said he anticipates West Jordan topping six figures within two to three years.
"It's an exciting and scary time," Newton said.
Newcomer Melissa Johnson and incumbent Kathy Hilton were sworn in as City Council members.
"We won't always agree," Newton told the council. "But we'll do our best to move the city forward."
