LAYTON - Focus and determination.

That's the battle cry for Mayor Steve Curtis as he took over Davis County's biggest city Tuesday.

Borrowing from a Nike ad campaign, he said Layton needs to "just do it" as it moves into an era of change, thanks to the impending arrival of commuter rail, a new interchange and the redevelopment of historic Main Street.

Curtis described Layton as an athlete shopping for groceries while training for the big race.

"Focus on your budget and stick to your plan of what to eat," Curtis said, citing the need also to ignore "the Twinkies that are calling your name."

Layton also swore in two new council members: Kathy Hyde and Michael Bouwhuis.

The council named two-term Councilman Renny Knowlton to fill the remaining two years on Curtis' council term.
