Salt Lake County has named Salt Lake City's assistant fleet director as the new boss of its beleaguered vehicle operation. John Webster takes over as county fleet manager after serving 18 years in the capital city. He replaces Nick Morgan, who was forced out of the county job earlier this year following a spate of scandals that played prominently during the 2004 election. "He is as honest as the day is long," Chief Administrative Officer Doug Willmore said about Webster. "He knows his stuff and measures everything." County officials launched a national search to fill the position before selecting Webster. He will be asked to further reform a fleet that recently saw its size and budget slashed following a 2004 gas-stealing scandal and allegations of overtime abuse. - Derek P. Jensen
