WASHINGTON - Congress approved a bill on Tuesday for the Bureau of Land Management to convey 200 acres of land to Beaver County so it can control Minersville State Park. The bill, sponsored by Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, also allows the county to sell off part of the land to help maintain the park. The county says it is losing about $90,000 a year on maintenance and operations. Beaver County was first granted the land to use in 1963 and the state took over control a year later, but recently reversed management back to the county. Rep. Chris Cannon, R-Utah, said on the House floor Tuesday that the park was important to the area. "This legislation gives Beaver County the necessary flexibility to generate revenue for continued use, without which Utah will be forced to close the park," Cannon said. The bill now goes to President Bush for his signature. - Thomas Burr
