CEDAR CITY - A coin toss has settled a tied race for a Parowan City Council seat.

After Election Day, candidates Dale Bettridge and Jess Askeroth were separated by just three votes, with Bettridge in the lead and absentee ballots still to count.

The absentee count brought the race to a dead heat, with each candidate earning 359 votes.

The tie was broken during a special meeting Wednesday night with a flip of a Susan B. Anthony dollar by Mayor Ron Smith. Bettridge was the winner.

Bettridge and Askeroth drew slips of paper inscribed with ''heads'' or ''tails'' before the flip. Askeroth, who was hanging Christmas lights on his home when he got a call summoning him to the courthouse, drew first and picked ''heads.''
