Election night results didn't hold up for the City Council race in Spanish Fork. Council candidate G. Wayne Andersen, who trailed Royden Hill by two votes after the unofficial results were tabulated last week, leapfrogged Hill on Tuesday when the provisional and absentee ballots were tallied. Spanish Fork had 78 provisional ballots and four absentee ballots. After the 82 extra ballots were counted, Andersen edged Hill by eight votes and will now join Steve Leifson as the newest members of the Spanish Fork City Council - as long as the results hold up over a recount. "It's been a complete roller coaster ride," Andersen said Tuesday. "It certainly generates butterflies." Because Andersen's lead is less than the number of precincts in Spanish Fork (16), by state statute, Hill was given seven days to ask City Recorder Kent Clark for a recount. He did just that during Tuesday's City Council meeting. Clark said judges will recount the 4,697 ballots Monday. The City Council will have a special meeting later that afternoon to certify the final vote. Mayor-elect Joe Thomas held his winning position after the canvass, beating challenger Sherman Huff by 71 votes. - Todd Hollingshead
