"It was a complete surprise when I got it," said Casey Daniel, a sophomore at Salt Lake Community College, when she received the Governor's Scholars Award, an award she didn't know existed. "I think it's cool we're being recognized for academics."
The Governor's Scholar Award did not exist until recently. The award was created by Gov. Huntsman to recognize academic excellence in Utah freshman and sophomore college students. "This award gives you a glimpse into the future, and is meant to inspire you and remind you there is more to come," Gov. Huntsman said to recipients at a luncheon held at the Governor's mansion on Friday. Four students were chosen by each Utah college or university, based on academic excellence both in high school and college. Forty-four students were presented plaques of academic achievement by Gov. Huntsman.
