Included in an omnibus bill for several government agencies is nearly $20 million for Utah transit projects, with $9 million of that funding earmarked for design and construction of the first phase of the commuter rail line between Salt Lake City and Ogden.
Utah communities also will see about $3.9 million for economic development.
"Investing in transportation infrastructure and economic development are key to the health and vitality of Utah's economy," said Sen. Bob Bennett, who, along with Republican Senate colleague Orrin Hatch, pushed for the Utah money.
"Whether it's money for additional buses or a light-rail extension, these funds help us make important progress meeting many of the state's infrastructure needs," Bennett added.
Hatch praised the bill, saying it helps improve on one of the state's highest priorities: transportation.
"This funding, combined with the millions secured through the transportation bill earlier this year, will make a significant impact on increasing our transit capacity," Hatch said.
The bill also carries $1 million for economic development and community projects in Provo, Eagle Mountain and Hyrum and $1 million to help revitalize the historical district in Sandy.
The bill now heads to negotiations between the House and Senate versions of the appropriations bill. The legislation also designates $15.6 billion for low-income housing vouchers.
