Utah's tax collections have exceeded projections by $63.7 million in the first three months of the fiscal year that began July 1. That includes a one-month increase of $16.9 million in unexpected revenue, according to a report released by the State Tax Commission. Much of the economic growth stems from higher than expected corporate taxes and a steady rise in sales tax receipts. The motor fuel tax continues to exceed economists' projections despite the high price at the pump. Utah collected $3.7 million more in the motor fuel tax than anticipated. If the surplus holds, lawmakers will have extra money to spend when the Legislature convenes in January. - Matt Canham
