In a split verdict Tuesday, jurors found Jennete Killpack guilty of child abuse homicide for forcing her adopted 4-year-old daughter, Cassandra, to drink a fatal amount of water but cleared her husband, Richard.
Jennete Killpack, 29, is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 7 by 4th District Judge Claudia Laycock. The second-degree felony count carries a maximum sentence of one to 15 years in prison. Prosecutors did not ask to take her into custody, and did not immediately say what sentence they will seek.
FATAL VAN ROLLOVER
On Tuesday morning, a minivan with 16 illegal immigrants rolled off U.S. Highway 191 about 26 miles southeast of Moab. One woman died in the crash, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials say the immigrants in the minivan were being smuggled into the country.
The 17-year-old driver was found about a mile north of the crash almost 12 hours later. He was taken to the San Juan County Juvenile Holding Facility and could face federal charges.
