A 21-year-old Salt Lake County man died Saturday about noon when he jumped into a creek to rescue his puppy and tumbled 120 feet down a waterfall. The man and three of his friends were hiking Dry Creek Trail in the Lone Peak Wilderness area near Alpine when he jumped into the creek - between 4 and 6 inches deep - slipped and fell down Horse Tail Falls into a bed of moss-covered granite rocks, said Tom Hodgson, a sergeant in the Utah County Sheriff's Office. The man died at the scene, a sheriff's spokesman said. The puppy, which also fell down Horse Tail Falls, survived. It took Utah County Sheriff's Office rescuers several hours to retrieve the man and hike his body down the steep, rugged trail. His name was not released, pending notification of next of kin. - Lisa Rosetta
