When commuter rail hits town, TRAX could be waiting

The light-rail extension from Salt Lake City's new transit hub to the Delta Center may yet be built by the time heavy-commuter rail starts in 2008. There was some question about that because the city has been stalled in designing the TRAX extension. Without the TRAX line in place, commuters traveling from northern Utah to downtown Salt Lake City on heavy rail would have to take buses from the transit hub, at 300 South and 600 West, to get to the light-rail line that ends at the Delta Center. But the City Council gave the mayor's office the go-ahead this week to start on the design, hoping the line will be built in time for commuter rail's debut in spring 2008. The design will include two TRAX stations between the hub and the Delta Center. But the finished product may have one station. Mayor Rocky Anderson wants two to spur dense development in the blocks surrounding the TRAX line, while some council members want one. The number of stations will be decided next year. - Heather May
