The gravel pit has hit Utah's airways and mailboxes. Friends of Quarry Bend, a pro-gravel-pit development group financed by Wal-Mart, launched an advertising campaign earlier this week. The group has mailed out glossy 9-by-12-inch ads to Sandy residents. The two direct mailings argue the development will bring property and sales taxes, jobs and parks to Sandy. They also quote former Utah House Speaker Craig Moody. Friends of Quarry Bend launched one-minute-long radio spots with a collage of voices attesting to the development's benefits. In contrast, the grass-roots Save Our Communities, which opposes project, is handing out photocopied fliers door to door. - Jacob Santini
