Mount Owen climber injured in 25-foot fall

A Salt Lake City man was taken to a hospital Friday after falling from a climb on the west face of Mount Owen in Grand Teton National Park. Peter Ericson, 23, fell about 25 feet and suffered injuries to his leg and arm after pulling on a loose rock, park officials said. His climbing partner, a 23-year-old Colorado man, called 911 from his cell phone around 12:30 p.m. to report the fall, according to park public affairs officer Jackie Skaggs. Rescue crews used a helicopter to reach the men and transported Ericson to a hospital in Jackson Hole, Wyo., where he was treated and later released.

Police identify Tooele man accidentally killed by wife

Police in Tooele County have released the name of a man who died while shooting target practice Friday with his wife. Travis Neil, 29, of Pleasant Grove, suffered a gunshot to his upper torso when his wife accidentally fired the gun in his direction, police said. The couple had been shooting a 12-gauge shotgun in a gravel pit along State Road 73 about 30 miles south of Tooele. The loaded gun was placed in the back of their SUV when it began to rain. Neil's wife was moving some items around in the back of the truck when she picked up the gun and it discharged, police said.

Salt Lake City police seek two suspects in car theft

Police were searching Monday for two men who stole a car at gunpoint after midnight Saturday from a man at a Salt Lake City car wash at 36 N. 900 West. The man was approached by the two men, one of whom pointed a handgun at him, according to Salt Lake police. The men told him they were taking his car, and then left southbound in the vehicle. Two minutes after the victim called police, officers were dispatched to a crash at 573 W. 2890 South involving the car, which was severely damaged.

Man arrested in kidnapping of ex-girlfriend

Salt Lake City police arrested a 37-year-old man on suspicion of domestic-violence-related aggravated kidnapping Sunday. The man allegedly abducted his ex-girlfriend at knife point at her home in Spokane, Wash., on Friday, according to Salt Lake City police. The 35-year-old woman was able to call a relative from a Salt Lake City convenience store at 960 W. North Temple, and the relative called police about 1:10 p.m. Officers spotted the man's vehicle at the Overniter Motor Inn, 1500 W. North Temple, rescued the woman, who was not seriously injured, and arrested her ex-boyfriend.

Robber sentenced to prison after guilty plea

The second of two men who robbed an elderly Salt Lake County man after accosting him outside his home with a hatchet and a gun has been sent to prison. Jeffery Ron Steinke, 22, was sentenced to serve up to life for the Jan. 12, 2005, robbery. Steinke and Jessie Ervin Nielsen, 24 - both on federal parole at the time of the crime - each pleaded guilty in 3rd District Court to aggravated burglary and two counts of possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person. Nielsen was sentenced to prison for up to life in June. The men surprised the victim as he was headed to his mailbox. They took his wallet, and Steinke cut the man's hand with a hatchet. They forced him into his house and took six handguns, ammunition and camera equipment. The robbers were tracked down through the car they were driving.

Hearing set for four suspects in woman's slaying

A Dec. 9 preliminary hearing has been set for four people charged with the Aug. 18 shotgun killing of a pregnant woman whose child was delivered by Caesarean section. Kerri Dawn Armant, Robert Everett Collins, Andrea A. Martinez and Lawrence Clinton Valdez all are charged with first-degree felony counts of murder and aggravated robbery for the death of Darla Woundedhead at a Salt Lake City motel. Woundedhead was shot when the suspects allegedly came to rob the room's occupants of money and drugs. Woundedhead's baby is reported in stable condition on life support at Primary Children's Medical Center. The custody of the baby will be determined by a juvenile court judge.

Boy Scout injured while working on Sept. 11 project

A 14-year-old working on a Boy Scout flag project to commemorate the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks was injured Monday morning when he ran in front of a car in West Valley City. The boy, who suffered a head injury, was flown to Primary Children's Medical Center and was expected to be released today, said West Valley City police Lt. Dale Brophy. The accident was under investigation Monday.

Driver charged with homicide in teenager's death

A West Valley City man accused of killing a Hunter High student while driving drunk was arraigned Monday in 3rd District Court. Jeremy Ryan Reed, 21, is charged with second-degree felony automobile homicide and six misdemeanors in the Aug. 29 death of Gregorio Rodriguez Jr., 15. Witnesses said Reed sped through the school parking lot, then made a U-turn on a nearby street and swerved to deliberately hit the victim, who was alongside 5600 West near 4500 South. Reed's blood-alcohol content was measured at 0.28 - more than three times Utah's legal limit, according to charging documents. Reed is being held on $50,000 bail. A bail hearing is set for today in 3rd District Court.

Virginia man dies aboard flight bound for Salt Lake City

A Virginia man died Saturday aboard a flight bound for Salt Lake City. Delta Air Lines flight 1571 departed Vancouver, British Columbia, at 1 p.m. and diverted to Twin Falls, Idaho, at 4:21 p.m. to try to get the treatment for the man, but the he was dead when emergency teams arrived, said Staff Sgt. Mike Covington of the Twin Falls Police Department. Covington said the man suffered from terminal lung cancer and that caused his death. Covington declined to identify the man except to say he was a 54-year-old from Virginia and was trying to return home with his wife and other family. The passengers aboard Flight 1571 were rescreened in Twin Falls and the flight landed in Salt Lake City about 8 p.m.
