PROVO - Candidates Jim L. Vein and Andrew P. Thompson officially withdrew from the Provo mayoral race Wednesday, leaving a one-on-one showdown this fall between incumbent Lewis Billings and retired firefighter Dave Bailey.
The city recorder's office confirmed that Vein and Thompson have sent letters and have signed affidavits requesting their names be removed from the ballot. Their exits eliminate the need for an October primary election in Provo's mayoral contest.
Thompson and Vein have endorsed Bailey for mayor, Bailey said in a statement released Wednesday.
Billings edged Bailey in a nail-biter four years ago.
