Salt Lake City could divert $100,000 to help pay rent for about 25 families relocated to Utah because of Hurricane Katrina.
The money could cover rents for six to 12 months.
But, first, the city needs to know if the prospective recipients evacuated to Camp Williams really want to stick around.
"Some people may not want to stay once winter starts here," said LuAnn Clark, director of housing at the city. "People need to want to be here."
On Tuesday, the City Council unofficially agreed to divert federal money it would have used to help first-time home buyers.
Last weekend, the U.S. Conference of Mayors had requested that cities across the country identify money for housing to help evacuees. Mayor Rocky Anderson's office came up with this plan.
