TOOELE - Two-term Tooele Mayor Charlie Roberts, who is not seeking re-election this year, will leave his post Sept. 19 to take a position with the State Tax Commission.
Roberts is cutting his second term short by three months to become the public information officer for the agency. "This is just a great personal opportunity for me," he said Tuesday. The City Council will select a mayor pro tem from among its members to serve until January. Seven residents filed as candidates for mayor this year.
During Roberts' tenure, Tooele's population doubled, jumping from 14,000 to 28,000.
Roberts said he is most proud that the town built a new City Hall, aquatic center, animal shelter and four new parks without raising taxes. The mayor said he will miss his staff and city employees who make Tooele a special place to live and work.
