Here is a recent e-mail exchange between a potential tourist to Utah and the legislative webmaster of Utah.

From monte.hahcock@L-3com.com, May 24 at 10:10 a.m.: "Could you tell me exactly what the law is in Utah regarding seat belts? Thanks."

From legislative webmaster, May 24, at 1:29 p.m.: "You will find statutes regarding safety belts in the Utah Code, Title 41, Chapter 6a, Sections 1801-1806, and Section 1508, and Title 53, Chapter 1, Section 108. View these sections of the Utah Code from our home page by searching by title, chapter, and section. Thank you for using our Web site."

From monte.hahcock@L-3com.com, May 24 at 1:39 p.m.: "I am from out of state. Do I have to wear a seat belt in Utah in order not to get a ticket or not? It is sure funny how absolutely no one in Utah knows, including the police department."

From legislative webmaster, May 24, at 4:43 p.m.: "You have been provided with the titles, chapters, and sections in the Utah code that address safety belts. I suggest you read them to obtain the answer to your question. For your convenience, here is a quick link to the titles in the Utah code. http://le.utah.gov/%7Ecode/code.htm. It's quite easy to click on the appropriate chapter and section to access the applicable statutes.

Thank you for using our Web site."

From monte.hahcock@L-3com.com, May 25 at 5:40 a.m.: "So even the Utah legislators don't know if there is a seat belt law. Are there any other laws out in Utah you don't know about? When I move there how will I know when I'm breaking a law, when Utah's lawmakers don't even know? Yeah, that's where I want to move - Not! Unbelievable. I just wrote the Florida (where I live) legislators if there is a seat belt law. They immediately said, 'yes' definitely, with a list of fines if I did not adhere."

From legislative webmaster, May 25, 7:57 a.m.: "I gave you eight laws to review with a quick link. Perhaps if you read them, you won't feel the need to be frustrated any longer. Thank you for using our Web site."

From monte.hahcock@L- 3com.com, May 25 at 8:22 a.m.: "I want the words to come out of your mouth. Yes or no, does Utah have a seat belt law? Simple."

From legislative webmaster, May 25, 11:05 a.m.: "Yes, it is very simple. As simply stated before, we have eight statutes addressing safety belts. Read them. Thank you for using our Web site."

From monte.hahcock@L-3com.com, May 25 at 11:34 a.m.: "My god, you can't answer if Utah has a seat belt law or not. Is everyone in that state as stupid as you? I was planning on going there skiing next winter, but have changed my mind and am going to Colorado. They definitely have a mandatory seat belt law. All I'm after here is should I buckle up or not. And I find that even the police officers there do not know. Are you all polygamists? Probably all inbred!"

From legislative webmaster, May 25 at 12:57 p.m.: "Enjoy your trip to Colorado and remember to wear your seat belt! Thank you for using our Web site."
