Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. has appointed a new judicial nominating commission for the 7th District, which covers Carbon, Emery, Grand, and San Juan counties. Commission members serve four-year terms and screen applicants for judicial positions, forwarding a list of finalists on to the governor. The group is required by law to be bipartisan, and to include lawyers and nonlawyers. The members are volunteers. The appointees are:
* Sam Singleton of Ferron, a former junior high school principal and member of the Emery County School Board.
* Gwen Peacock of Castle Dale, homemaker and wife of Castle Dale Mayor Neal Peacock.
* Clayton Long of Blanding, who has been American Indian education director for San Juan School District.
* Craig Halls of Monticello, San Juan county attorney.
* Janet Lowe of Moab, director of the Moab Arts and Recreation Center.
* Ryan Thomas of Price, an attorney and president of the College of Eastern Utah.
* Barry Cook, a Price physician.
