Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. on Tuesday named attorney Keith Hamilton to the Utah Board of Pardons and Parole. Hamilton - who served on the parole board from 1997 through 2003 - will fill the vacancy in the five-member board left by outgoing board chairman Michael Sibbett. The governor, however, has not yet decided who will become the board's new chairperson. Sibbett has served on the board for 15 years, 12 of them as chairman. Hamilton, who left the board to practice criminal law, was one of five finalists interviewed by the governor last week. In Utah, trial judges sentence criminal defendants to indeterminate sentences, such as one to 15 years, or five to life. The parole board ultimately decides how much of that time an inmate actually serves. Hamilton's name will be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.
