A man has claimed to be the father of a child born last week to a slain woman, state social workers say.

The Utah Division of Child and Family Services said the man has been asked to take a paternity test to confirm he fathered the girl born posthumously to Darla M. Woundedhead. As of Wednesday, he had not done so, said DCFS spokeswoman Carol Sisco

The man is not allowed to visit the girl, whom hospital staff reportedly are calling "Janie," until his relationship is proven.

"Only close family can visit the child, and it's for the baby's protection," Sisco said.

Shortly after 1 a.m. last Thursday, someone knocked on Room 26 of the Dream Inn, 1865 W. North Temple, in Salt Lake City. Woundedhead, a 30-year-old who was 7 months pregnant, answered the door and was struck with a shotgun blast to her upper abdomen and chest, police say. She died at LDS Hospital where doctors then performed a Caesarean section to deliver the child.

The girl's court-appointed lawyer said Janie remained in critical condition Wednesday.

In a hearing Tuesday, state attorneys said Janie tested positive for cocaine, opiates and barbiturates, has a severe brain hemorrhage and is on life support. A judge Tuesday awarded temporary custody of Janie to DCFS.

Sisco said the man came forward last week shortly after the shooting. She declined to identify the man, except to say he's from the Salt Lake City area and does not speak English.

While proving paternity would allow the man to visit Janie, he would still have to pass a background check to take custody, Sisco said.

Salt Lake City police have arrested one suspect in the slaying, 32-year-old Kerri Armant, and are seeking three unidentified men who fled the scene.
