Former BYU field goal kicker Jason Chaffetz rose from relative obscurity last year when he ran the successful gubernatorial campaign for Jon Huntsman Jr. and then became Gov. Huntsman's chief of staff.

But, apparently, he's not satisfied being anyone's No. 2.

Several Republican sources confirmed that Chaffetz has been calling around to assess the possible support he might receive if he runs as a Republican next year against Utah's lone Democratic congressman, Jim Matheson, who will be seeking a third term.

One source said Chaffetz is not 100 percent sure he will enter the race, but by Labor Day will make a decision.

Before becoming a high-profile Republican by latching onto Huntsman's star, Chaffetz actually was a Democrat in the 1980s and was the Utah campaign chairman for 1988 presidential candidate Michael Dukakis.

But Republicans shouldn't hold that against him. Orrin Hatch was a New Deal Democrat at one point in his life.

Good intentions go awry: The Avalon Isle Women's Theatre Group held a fundraiser Saturday and the backyard barbecue raised a modest $630 for the struggling feminist theater company.

Tuesday, artistic director Candace Christensen went through the cashbox containing all the donations and wrote out thank-you cards. She put the box in the back seat of her car, covered it with a newspaper then went to StageRight Theatre Co. in Holladay where she had a reading performance.

When she returned to the parking lot, a side window of her car had been smashed in and the cash box was gone.

The bad news got worse when the investigating officer told her the checks from the donors that were stolen likely could be used for identity theft.

Now, there is no money to fund the fall production, "When Will I Dance, A Play About Frida Kahlo" by Claire Braz-Valentine.

And the "angels" who already donated could get ripped off for their generosity.
