Provo man charged with raping Orem woman

A 32-year-old Provo man has been charged with raping a woman he met on the Internet. Sergio Bolivar Herrera allegedly went to the Orem apartment of the 21-year-old woman July 4 and raped her in the bathroom, according to 4th District Court documents. He stopped when he heard a roommate, the documents state. Herrera has been charged with rape, a first-degree felony.

Fire closes freeway ramps near North Temple

Two ramps to North Temple were closed Thursday morning as firefighters fought flames on the west side of Salt Lake City. Firefighters were called to a fire, which had been sparked by a train, near 3400 West and Interstate 80 about 8:50 a.m., said Fire Department spokesman Dennis McKone. The offramp from Bangerter to North Temple and the ramp from Salt Lake City International Airport to North Temple were closed until about 12:15 p.m.

Shot by spouse, elderly woman out of critical condition

A Bountiful woman who was shot in the head three times by her husband Tuesday was out of critical condition Thursday and talking with doctors, police said. Marilyn S. Hawthorne, 77, who reportedly suffers from Alzheimer's disease, was recovering at LDS Hospital from the shooting, Bountiful Sgt. Lloyd Kilpack said. Investigators believe Hawthorne's 79-year-old husband, James Hawthorne, shot her and then killed himself because both were suffering from health problems. Police responded to the 1:30 a.m. shooting at a home on Cave Hollow Way. Marilyn Hawthorne was found in the couple's bathroom. James Hawthorne was found dead on the couple's bed.

Search is on for suspected home invaders

Police are looking for several suspects accused of breaking into a home and robbing two men at gunpoint early Thursday morning. The group broke into the men's house near 4700 South and Green Valley Drive about 1 a.m., said Salt Lake County Sheriff's Sgt. Mike Morgan. The men were able to escape from their alleged robbers who proceeded to steal several items, Morgan said. One of the victims was taken to a hospital with a cut on his head.

2-year-old in serious condition after 15-foot fall

A 2-year-old boy was flown to Primary Children's Medical Center on Wednesday night after falling from a second-floor window in Salt Lake County. Paramedics were called to the home near 3300 East and Will Ridge Road about 8:40 p.m. The parents told police their son was playing with flowers in a window planter when he fell 15 feet to the concrete below, said sheriff's Sgt. Mike Morgan. The boy remained in serious condition Thursday.
