Pinned against the produce stands in a Salt Lake County Wal-Mart by a 73-year-old man in a wheelchair, Deputy Christopher Maez drew his handgun.

Pointing the gun at at the elderly man, Maez told him to back up or he would shoot.

Instead, John T. Snyder allegedly tried to grab the deputy's gun. Realizing the threat would not stop Snyder, Maez drew his Taser. It took several shots from the stun gun before Snyder allegedly stopped driving his motorized wheelchair into the deputy.

Snyder, of Salt Lake City, was charged on Monday in 3rd District Court with a felony and two misdemeanors after his run-in with the Salt Lake County sheriff's deputy on July 4 at the Wal-Mart at 4827 S. 900 East.

Maez, responding to the store to investigate a repeat trespasser, was told by a security officer that Snyder had been banned from the business, according to 3rd District Court records.

The deputy came across Snyder in the produce aisle and asked him if he indeed had been banned from the store. Snyder replied he had not been, and the deputy asked Snyder to come outside to talk.

Snyder, however, allegedly drove his wheelchair into the deputy's leg, pointed at him and, using a curse word, told Maez to get away.

The deputy told him to watch his language, but Snyder became aggressive and belligerent, yelling profanities, according to court records. He also allegedly drove his wheelchair into Maez's legs and shins.

Maez backed up and bumped into a produce stand. Snyder proceeded to drive his wheelchair into the deputy pinning him against the produce stands and knocking some of the produce to the floor, according to court records. Snyder stopped only after Maez shot him several times with the Taser, court records say. Snyder was charged with disarming a peace officer, a first-degree felony, assault on a peace officer, a class A misdemeanor, and interference with a peace officer making an arrest, a class B misdemeanor.
