Police say boy admits starting West Valley fire

A 12-year-old boy admitted to starting a fire with a cigarette lighter Thursday that destroyed all-terrain vehicles, motor homes and campers, West Valley Fire Department Capt. Kris Romijn said Friday. Romijn said the boy might also have had fireworks. The boy was inside the parking lot of Advanced RV Supply when he started some Styrofoam and packing crates on fire, the captain said. The fire spread. The owner estimated damage at $700,000.

Teen dies after watercraft collide at Lake Powell

A 16-year-old Orem boy died Thursday on Lake Powell when a personal watercraft collided with the one he was riding, the National Park Service said Friday. The Park Service declined to release his name because he was a minor. The boy was in Wahweap Bay about 11 a.m. when he collided with someone else in his group. The other driver was not injured. It was the seventh fatal recreational accident this year at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.

Layton boy charged with shooting friend to death

A 13-year-old Layton boy was arrested on suspicion of reckless homicide, a third-degree felony, and booked in a juvenile detention facility Friday after he shot his 15-year-old friend in the chest. Layton police said the two boys, along with an 18-year-old man, were in a garage playing Russian roulette with a family friend's handgun when the shooting occurred. The 15-year-old boy, whose name was not released, was pronounced dead at Davis Hospital.

Man charged with raping disabled stepdaughter

A 50-year-old West Valley City man was charged with one count of rape Wednesday in 3rd District Court for allegedly having sex with his 32-year-old stepdaughter, who has Down syndrome. According to a probable-cause statement, the woman kept telling her stepfather to stop as he allegedly raped her. Afterward, he told her to shower, change her clothes and change her bed sheets.

Man charged in choking attack on girlfriend

A 51-year-old man was charged in 3rd District Court on Wednesday with attempted criminal homicide and aggravated assault for allegedly punching, knocking to the floor, straddling and choking his girlfriend until she was unconscious.
