A Senate committee gave Utah Court of Appeals nominee Carolyn Baldwin McHugh its blessing on Friday. Members of the Judicial Confirmation Committee voted unanimously in approval of McHugh's nomination. Before she can take office to replace retiring Judge Norman H. Jackson, McHugh must go before the full Senate for a confirmation vote on July 20. The 47-year-old attorney, who is the mother of two teenage sons, has practiced at Salt Lake City's Parr Waddoups Brown Gee & Loveless since 1983 and focuses on commercial litigation and environmental law. She earned her law degree from the University of Utah, and clerked with Utah federal Judge Bruce S. Jenkins before joining her firm. McHugh is a former Utah Women Lawyers president and has volunteered her time to represent clients in domestic and family law cases, and the interests of children in court as a volunteer guardian ad litem. McHugh made a short list of judicial nominations five times under former Gov. Mike Leavitt before becoming the first judicial appointment of Gov. Jon M. Huntsman Jr.'s term. - Elizabeth Neff
