HEBER CITY - After a spirited 2 1/2 -hour public hearing Wednesday night, the Heber City Planning Commission voted 6 to 1 to forward a recommendation to the City Council that would limit the size of retail stores to 75,000 square feet.

If the City Council adopts the recommendation, it would halt some big box development. In particular, it would keep a Wal-Mart Super Center from coming to Heber City.

Super Centers are 120,000 square feet and larger. The City Council is scheduled to hold a pubic hearing on the proposal June 6. The city's moratorium on big box development expires June 15.

With few exceptions, an overflow crowd of about 70 spoke against Wal-Mart and big box development.

Many, such as Burt Hurner, cited the small-town quality of life in Heber City.

"We moved here to live in a scenic area. These big boxes ruin the overall atmosphere of a small town," he said.

And some, such as Robert Duncan, said they feared a Wal-Mart Super Center would hurt locally owned businesses.

"Our community has been fighting for years to revitalize our business district. I think a big box would lead to more empty store fronts."
