Candidates for Salt Lake City offices will have more to spend during campaigns, but not on themselves.

City Council members agreed Tuesday to forbid candidates from using campaign contributions for their personal use. They also increased the amount donors can give to candidates. Starting Jan. 1, mayoral candidates can take $10,000 from individual donors instead of $7,500. Council candidates can accept $2,000 instead of $1,500.

Donors can and do get around the caps by donating through their spouses and/or companies.

The new rules won't apply in this November's municipal election. Four of the seven council seats are up.
