Two men stole about $80 from the driver of an ice cream truck Friday in West Valley City. The driver pulled the truck onto a street in the area of 3600 South and 4000 West about 7 p.m. when two men pulled up in a car, said West Valley City police Sgt. Steve Angell. The men approached the vehicle, and one of them pulled out a gun. Nobody was injured.
Salt Lake County deputies find drugs in apartment
Salt Lake County sheriff's deputies responding to a 911 call Thursday night found pounds of drugs and cash inside an apartment. The resident of the apartment on the 4700 South block of 900 East called 911 after someone kicked down his back door, said sheriff's Lt. Terri Sommers. The man had armed himself with a handgun and hid in a closet. Deputies didn't find any suspects, but uncovered scales, drug paraphernalia, and packaging materials, Sommers said. Deputies also found about a pound of marijuana, about 2 pounds of psilocybin mushrooms and several ounces of cocaine after the resident consented to a search of the apartment, Sommers said.
Anti-tax crusader must serve full fraud sentence
An anti-tax crusader who was convicted of fraud has failed to win a reduction in his 6-year prison sentence. The 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Thursday upheld the punishment imposed on John W. Benson, for one count of conspiracy and 69 counts of aiding and abetting the filing of false federal tax returns. The Midvale man helped operate "Association de Libertas," which conducted three-day seminars nationwide claiming that only minorities had to pay taxes. Seminar participants were shown how to get refunds by filling out amended tax returns.
Robber hits bank on North Temple
Salt Lake City police are looking for a man who robbed a Wells Fargo bank Friday at 1955 W. North Temple. The bandit was described as a white male, 35 to 40 years of age, about 6 feet tall. Photos from a bank camera show he had a goatee. The man fled in a black sedan, possibly with Texas license plates. Police said the man entered the bank at 10:43 a.m. He approached a teller and verbally demanded money. He exited the bank but left behind a suspicious package. Police evacuated the bank until a bomb unit determined the package was harmless. Anyone with information about the robbery can call the "Tips for Cash" hot line at 801-799-INFO.
Pleasant Grove man arrested in fire at mom's home
Pleasant Grove police arrested a 30-year-old man on suspicion of setting fire to his mother's home. Police booked Jeremy J. Wilkins on charges of aggravated arson and possession of a controlled substance, both felonies, as well as three misdemeanor charges. Police responded to a 911 call from a woman needing help. Upon arrival at the residence, they found the woman had fled to a neighbor's home to escape from her son, Wilkins. Wilkins allegedly brandished a knife but was disarmed by officers. Police entered the home and found the basement engulfed in flames. Firefighters extinguished the flames.
