Bob Bennett, the state's three-term U.S. Senator, was honored Thursday with a scholarship in his name at the University of Utah's Hinckley Institute of Politics. The new scholarship honoring Utah's junior senator, an alumnus, was announced by Douglas Bennett, nephew of Sen. Bennett and vice president for federal affairs at Liberty Mutual Group. More than $50,000 of the $75,000 scholarship goal has been raised from private donations, he said. The Robert F. Bennett Scholarship will allow a U. political science major to spend a semester in Washington, serving as a Hinckley intern in a congressional or related office, according to Ron Hrebenar, chair of the Political Science Department and institute's outgoing interim director. Every year, the institute places dozens of students in various locations around the country and abroad. The Washington-based internships put students in the center of politics and government, Hrebenar said. - Shinika A. Sykes
