Evans, a former state senator who also is a legislative lobbyist, supported Huntsman in his Republican gubernatorial primary battle against former House Speaker Nolan Karras and has been lobbying the Huntsman administration for the job since January.
Huntsman chief of staff Jason Chaffetz says the job search is open and the interview process has not yet begun.
Evans lobbied former Gov. Mike Leavitt for an appointment on the board and was reportedly disappointed when Leavitt did not appoint him, especially after the Legislature expanded the number of board members from three to five.
Evans was a longtime employee of the Utah Department of Corrections before retiring in 1999. Shortly after his retirement, he accepted a newly created job funded by Corrections and the State Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health, so he simultaneously collected a state pension and a state salary. He also was still a state senator at the time and no one else was interviewed for the newly created position.
The militia strikes: After Marcie Smith West of Clearfield had a pleasant lunch with a friend at Bangkok Thai in Foothill Village on Thursday, she returned to her car in the shopping center's parking lot to find it contained a new bumper sticker.
West's car already boasted a bumper sticker that says "Democratic Women are the Life of the Party." The unwanted sticker said: "Do the U.S. a Favor. Deport All Protesters."
As we all know, if you are a Democrat, especially a woman Democrat, you are automatically a protester, right?
Had West been able to talk to the vandal, she would have pointed out her father-in-law is a major in the U.S. Air Force and two brothers-in-law have served in Iraq. Another is serving near the DMZ in Korea.
Closed but not dead: The South High Alumni Association is looking for a few good alums who have some talent - be it dancing, singing or playing a musical instrument - to perform at One Grand Homecoming," the association's 10th anniversary extravaganza.
The association was founded in 1995 (seven years after Salt Lake School District closed South High) to raise money for a Salt Lake Community College scholarship program benefiting the descendents of South High alumni.
In the past 10 years, the association has raised over $750,000 and has awarded a quarter of a million dollars in scholarships to more than 270 individuals.
The event, scheduled for June 17 and 18, will feature an open house at the school with displays of memorabilia, tours, refreshments and a display of work from South High artists, plus a variety show in the Grand Theatre.
Bill Marcroft, Edna Anderson-Taylor, Jenny Bennett and other alumni who audition will give an entertaining retrospective of South's history.
