Paul Van Dam, a former U.S. Senate candidate and one-time Utah attorney general, has withdrawn from the race for Utah Democratic Party chairman, leaving eight candidates in the race.
"It has become evident that my commitment to perform in a benefit concert for tsunami victims later this month will make it impossible for me to run for chair of the Utah Democratic Party," Van Dam said in a statement. "So today I reluctantly announce my withdrawal from the race for the position." Van Dam was one of the first candidates to file for the race. He withdrew the day after the filing deadline. Current state Chairman Donald Dunn is not seeking a second term. Delegates will elect a new leader from among eight remaining candidates on May 7.
